The Brave by Robert Lipsyte

My Rating: 1 star

This book was honestly a waste of my time. I had to read it for an English project in school this past month, and although I did well with my assignments, I didn’t enjoy the book at all. Half the time I felt like I didn’t really know what was going on and I actually had to go back and reread sections that I just read to fully understand everything. Not one single thing about this book grabbed my attention to make me continue reading or want more.
And I think that it’s a real big shame because I wish I could have a book I enjoy reading for a school assignment, because I feel like I didn’t even learn anything from this book. I actually dreaded picking it up and reading it.

The Lying Game by Sara Shepard

My Rating: 5 stars

Emma never knew she had a long-lost twin sister, until one day a boy in her foster family shows her a strange video online of a girl who looks exactly like her. Her name is Sutton and she has a perfect life – the life Emma always dreamed about….except for one thing: Sutton is dead. But Emma doesn’t know that until she goes to meet Sutton and runs into Sutton’s shallow friends. Emma doesn’t know who killed Sutton; it could be any one of her friends. Emma not only tries to decipher Sutton’s strange life, she literally becomes Sutton. How far will Emma go to uncover the mystery of her twin sister’s death?
I went into this book with high hopes – I adore Sara Shepard and the plotline to this book seemed fabulous. And thankfully, I was satisfied. The Lying Game was just as good as every Pretty Little Liars book. Sara Shepard has such great talent and she really delivered. I can’t wait to read the next one!

It’s Kind of a Funny Story

My Rating: 5 stars

So, I went into this movie with high hopes. This book was absolutely fabulous and inspiring, could the movie ever live up to it?
Well, surprisingly, it basically did. I mean, it will never be as amazing as book, but isn’t that always the case? I really liked how the movie was set up. The movie started out when Craig checks into the hospital and he has flashbacks at certain points explaining his situation with his family, school, friends, etc.
Keir Gilchrist played Craig and he did a fantastic job. I feel like he really brought Craig’s personality to life. Also, Zach Galifianakis and Emma Roberts starred in this film. Zach played Bobby, Craig’s used-to-be-druggie friend who helps him sort out his problems while in the hospital. And Emma played Noelle, Craig’s scarred love interest that also helped him out along the way. I was also surprised to see Jeremy Davies, who played Smitty and starred in my favorite TV show, Lost. I felt this whole cast was just great all around, especially the other hospital members.
The one thing I was worried about though was the aspect of Craig drawing the brain maps. I thought that was going to be left out, to be honest. But thankfully, it was added in the movie and the idea of the healing power of art was brought to life.
Overall, this was a fantastic movie. If you love the book as much as I do, you will definitely love the movie.

Elixir by Hilary Duff

My Rating: 4 stars

Clea Raymond, the daughter of a well-known politician and surgeon was always used to the spotlight. She is a photojournalist who travels the world, documenting every moment with just a push of a button. After Clea’s father disappears while on a humanitarian mission, she starts to notice a strange figure reappearing in many of her photographs: a bizarre, young, beautiful and strangely alluring man who looks the same in every photo. She is immediately drawn to this stranger. What Clea doesn’t know is that this man could help her find her lost father and unlock the answers to the century-long both of theirs. Together they unravel their pasts in order to save their lives…and their futures.
Okay, so first of all, although I LOVE the main plot/idea of this book, it took me a while to actually get into it. It took until around page 100 for it to get even remotely interesting. I was just about to give up on it when it started to get good, to be honest. Then, I just kept picturing Hilary Duff’s old Disney show, Lizzie McGuire. The main character has a quirky best friend and a guy best friend who secretly loves her. Maybe it’s just me but it’s kind of similar. Also at times I felt like the dialogue seemed unrealistic. I feel like a lot of things people said wouldn’t have been said by kids that are really seventeen years or older. And I feel like there could be more questions answered, unless we’re supposed to think of our own ways of how it ends. Maybe there will be a sequel?
But, overall, I did like the main plot of this book, so that kind of made up for everything else and I’m really impressed by Hilary Duff. And props to Elise Allen, who helped her write it. 🙂

Wanted by Sara Shepard

My Rating: 5 stars

**If you haven’t read previous books, don’t read!**

This is where all the answers are supposed to show up, where everything is supposed to make sense. In the last Pretty Little Liars book, Hanna, Spencer, Emily and Aria are faced with a few more surprises before they finally figure out all the answers behind Ali’s death and who A really is. But first, someone they least expect shows up in Rosewood. All four Pretty Little Liars must dive back into their memories and read all the clues right to figure this one out. There aren’t always happy endings…
I can’t believe this was the last PLL book! It was definitely one of the best ones. Every chapter there was a new twist and direction of the plotline, it kept me wanting more and more the whole time.
Over all, I love this series to death. It is one of the best series I have read in a long time.

Heartless by Sara Shepard

In the second to last book of the Pretty Little Liars series, there still is a lot to be revealed. When Spencer, Aria, Hanna and Emily first claimed they saw Ian Thomas’s lifeless body in the woods, no one believed them. Now that they’re saying that all four of them saw their dead best friend, Ali, in the same woods that caught fire, no one believes anything they say. Hanna is spending some time in rehab. Emily is visiting the Amish. Aria is trying to contact the dead. And Spencer thinks someone in her family is hiding a big secret…like a murder. But there is still that one unanswered question: who killed Alison?
Once again, this was another A+ Pretty Little Liars book. There were so many unexpected parts and unanswered questions, I can’t wait to read the next one! I just want to know who killed Alison already and what the real story is! And I can’t believe the series is almost done…
Overall, this was a great book.

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

My Rating: 3 stars

I honestly started this book thinking it was going to be some Sci-Fi action novel, but it was kind of the opposite. This book took to about page 300 to get somewhat interesting and action-filled. Most of the book was minor action scenes and the life of the main character, Number Four and what he did under his alias name ‘John’. I didn’t finish reading this book because I really just lost interest. By the time it got to I guess what you could call the main point of the book I just didn’t care anymore.
It’s a shame, because the movie makes this book look so good and I really liked the overall main plot of this book. But I just wasn’t overly impressed.

The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney

My Rating: 5 stars
Warning: Rated PG-13

Alex Patrick attends an elite high school for especially smart and talented students. The teachers and administration at Themis trust the students. They all believe the students will behave the right way – the Themis way. And Themis doesn’t have a handbook, or a code of conduct. They have the Mockingbirds. The Mockingbirds are a group of students who secretly gather together and solve the problems of students and correct the wrong-doers of the school. When Alex is date-raped during one night of her junior year at Themis, she goes to the Mockingbirds for help.
Throughout the story Alex rediscovers herself and her love of music which was tainted by this terrible event in her life. She learns the most important thing to do is to stand up for yourself.
I am absolutely in love with this novel. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Although Alex’s story is fictional, it’s real. It’s something that happens every day. Some women keep quiet about it, doing nothing. Through Alex, Daisy Whitney teaches us that the best thing you can do is stand up for what is right.
If you have not heard of or read this book, please do. It is truly amazing.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini

My Rating: 5 stars

Craig was just your average fifteen year old teenager in high school. But when he first started at a really prestigious high school for exceptionally smart teenagers, he began to feel the pressure. Just after the first half of a year of his freshman year in high school, he starts to feel the weight of the pressure and stress of succeeding in school and in life. Craig falls into a deep depression. He can’t sleep, eat, or even think without being taken over by this empty feeling. On the night he was going to commit suicide, Craig decides to check himself into a hospital to get the help he needs and find the true cause of his anxiety.
“It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is probably one of the best books I have ever read, hands down. Not only is this book an inspiration for teenagers suffering with depression to find the help they need, but it is exceptionally realistic. Nothing remotely tragic happened to Craig. No one passed away. His parents didn’t get a divorce. Simply the pressures and stress of doing well in high school pushed him into a depression. Just as a student in high school Craig’s story is so relatable. It’s so real, that at moments it’s actually kind of funny. The characters spew sarcastic, everyday humor.
If you haven’t read of this book, please do. It’s a masterpiece.

And if you are feeling what Craig was feeling, please follow his path. You can get the help you need. Although Craig’s story is fictional, it is the truth. It gets better. <3

Killer by Sara Shepard

My Rating: 4 stars

In the sixth installment of the Pretty Little Liars series, once again everything is a mess. Hanna is out to get her soon-to-be-stepsister, Kate, who she believes is out to get her. Spencer is now in contact with a woman who she believes is her real mom. Emily’s relationship with her boyfriend Isaac is on the rocks. And Aria is trying to figure out Jason DiLaurentis’s past. The new A assists them with text messages, but are these notes good or bad? Is new A helping them? Or steering them in the wrong direction? And, finally, the four girls might actually know who really killed Ali.
Pretty Little Liars books never fail to surprise me. There are new suspicions and problems on every page. I love it! And I can’t wait to finish the series.
