It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
My Rating: 5 stars
Craig was just your average fifteen year old teenager in high school. But when he first started at a really prestigious high school for exceptionally smart teenagers, he began to feel the pressure. Just after the first half of a year of his freshman year in high school, he starts to feel the weight of the pressure and stress of succeeding in school and in life. Craig falls into a deep depression. He can’t sleep, eat, or even think without being taken over by this empty feeling. On the night he was going to commit suicide, Craig decides to check himself into a hospital to get the help he needs and find the true cause of his anxiety.
“It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is probably one of the best books I have ever read, hands down. Not only is this book an inspiration for teenagers suffering with depression to find the help they need, but it is exceptionally realistic. Nothing remotely tragic happened to Craig. No one passed away. His parents didn’t get a divorce. Simply the pressures and stress of doing well in high school pushed him into a depression. Just as a student in high school Craig’s story is so relatable. It’s so real, that at moments it’s actually kind of funny. The characters spew sarcastic, everyday humor.
If you haven’t read of this book, please do. It’s a masterpiece.
And if you are feeling what Craig was feeling, please follow his path. You can get the help you need. Although Craig’s story is fictional, it is the truth. It gets better. <3
