The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe
My Rating: 5 stars
The narrator of this strange story claims he is sane, yet he is sitting in jail awaiting his death. But as the narrator looks back and tells you why he is in jail, you start to think the opposite. The narrator, who was never named, says that he has always been an animal lover. After he married, he still had a lot of pets. His favorite was a black cat named Pluto. Although he loved his pets, he began to have terrible mood swings and mistreat them. And then, one night, the narrator comes home drunk. He gets so annoyed with Pluto that he cuts out one of the cat’s eyes. From there on, you are taken on a grim journey with the narrator and his black cat.
I really, really love Edgar Allan Poe. I really do. And although his stories can be confusing at times, I really love them. The Black Cat is one of my favorite short stories by Poe. I love mystery and grimness of it all. I love how you can connect elements of his stories to his life. Overall, Edgar Allan Poe is an amazing writer, and if you like this story, you’ll like anything he’s written.
