Harry Potter vs. Twilight

Neither can live while the other survives. See ya, Edward.

For at least a year, or maybe even more, there has a been huge controversy over the one simple question: Harry Potter or Twilight? For me, I’m totally Team Potter, but I’m sure a lot of other people would rather be dreaming about the mesmerizing, sparkling vampires and strong werewolves than the complex storyline written by J.K. Rowling. But, there are some things to consider.

First of all, it all goes down to the matter of values that go way beyond the story’s plotline.
Let’s start off with Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight”. The whole series mostly focuses on the eternal love of Bella Swan and her sparkly Romeo. But when you really look into it, it’s pushing the characters into crazy obsession and stalking. Bella then abandons her friends to focus only on her boyfriend, and gives up her life friends and family just to be with him forever. Twilight encourages young teenagers, girls in particular, to have no friends and aspirations and to just wait for their “Edward”.

The “Harry Potter” books also focus on the meaning of love, but it a totally different way. Harry’s story encourages love for all humankind. We are taught about true sacrifice, true friendship and the true meaning of love. But most of all, we are taught that life isn’t always easy. Harry and his friends sacrifice themselves and use their love for their family and friends to do anything for the common good. The main female characters in these books didn’t give up all of their dreams for a relationship.

It is clear to see which message the novels are sending out is superior. Sure, read about the vamps, but think about your reading first.

Wizards rule.

I’m sorry to hear that you will never pick up a Harry Potter book, Marissa. That is quite sad.
Okay, yes, the Twilight Saga might actually be good books, I give you that one. But do you see the hidden messages in the book? Read my posts. Bella gives up her life: school, friends, carrer, for a boy. She is a teen mom. Those are bad influences for younger girls these days.

I don’t really even get why they’re compared. Sure they’re both teen(ish) books but seriously, completely different (though Harry Potter’s way better. Cause really? Sparkly Vampires. I bet they’ll start having glow-in-the-dark werewolves now) The only thing really similar is the fact that Edward and Cedric are the same actor and they both happen to be dead.

Totally team Potter 100%! The Twilight saga was so generic! Forbidden love blah blah blah gag me! lmao Harry Potter is so original and so perfectly written. It makes you become attached to the characters and think they’re real (believe me i’ve thought) Stephenie Meyer’s story is completely overdone and has such a limited amount of characters. In HP you had SO many characters, yet you wouldn’t get confused and not remember them. Rowling always gave her characters significant characteristics. I still think to myself all the time “How in the world did J.K. Rowling think of her plot, characters, setting, etc.” She is just awesome!

Tierney, you are absolutely right. Harry Potter has such an advanced and complex story line and character and setting setup, it reigns supreme to Stephenie Meyer’s books!
And Bella, I read the Twilight books too, and they were okayish. But HP is definitley better. ! :]

Well, I am definetly a twi-hard, but i have to admit that Harry Potter is an amazing book series. I just starting reading them the other day. I don’t even understand why they are compared…both two totally different kinds of books.
One focuses on magic, wizards, and all the things that come with that.
The focuses on myths, and legends, and a complicated romance.
I love both series for different reasons, but if I had to choose I would say that Harry Potter is a little bit better 🙂

I understand what you mean, Jill. I also think it is weird that Harry Potter and Twilight are being compared, because yes, they are about two different things. But I am mostly focusing on one aspect of the stories, which is the meaning of love. Harry Potter focuses on a healthier type of love, where it is kind of the opposite for Twilight. Love is one of the main ideas of these two book series, and there is a big difference between both.

Ok, well, here is my opinion. I love Twilight…and Harry Potter.
Twilight was an “ok book”. Like, NewMoon and Eclipse we sooo much better. Where, in Harry Potter, I liked every book but the 1,2,and4. And im not an Edward fan so…….I’ll have to say TEAM POTTER!!!!

Unless it was Jacob vs Harry. Sorry Harry, but, your going down!!

I love HP, its my favorite book series:D I read twilight a while back and I really, really hated it. It was badly written(did we really need 3 pages worth of description every time Bella mentioned Edward’s supposed awesomeness? No, we did not), Bella whined too much, Edward was a controlling jerk, and neither Edward nor Bella had much of a personality. Harry Potter, on the other hand, is amazing. It’s got well developed characters, so well developed that you feel really attached to them, an amazing plot, and it was funny too:D So… yeah. I’m team Potter, if you couldn’t already tell.

I’m Team Potter all the way with ya, Bri, and I agree pretty much 100% with you with the crazed, creepy obsession that is Bella and Edward’s relationship. I will give Stephenie Meyer props though, because even though Bella chooses Edward over her friends, family, and life, Meyer did get some things right when it comes to the meaning of love in the saga. Take Victoria for example: her entire character is based on her love for James. Edward killed James, and Victoria vows to avenge him, which I think makes for a very passionate, troubled character, which “Twilight” needed, what with Edward being perfect, and all. Jacob also had the right idea of love, too. He never gave up on Bella, which is a good lesson, to never give up on what you love. In Eclipse, he even fought along side his enemies to protect Bella, which I think proved his love. She got it right with those two characters, in my opinion. Now if only she had gotten it right with supposedly flawless, but super sexist Edward, and “Oh no, save me! Oh no, I fell down! Oh no, I started a vampire war! Oh no, I’m in love with two monsters and I can’t choose! Oh no, I should have chose Mike Newton!” Bella…

Hahaha, thank you soo much for commenting! I absolutely love your last name! ;] Tom Felton!<3
You made a lot of really good points; i basically agree with all of them. About what you said about Victoria and Jacob: They did show a few characteristics of the right meaning of love, I guess. Victoria tryed to avenge Edward for killing James. It could kind of been seen as obsession… But she loved James so much, she did came across as a very passionate character. I agree on the point you made about Jacob. He did consistently love Bella and prove that he did without being melodramatic and annoying like Edward was sometimes.
I wish she chose a different personality for Bella. But i guess it kind of fits because in the end Bella finally "fits in" with the Cullens and vampires in general, where she didn't really get along well with humans and the human world.

Who can compete with our Tom Felton? ;D
I definitely agree that Victoria could be seen as obsessed, but I think then you have to recognize that she is a vampire, and she’s been alive for who-knows-how-many years, and she did have the time on her hands to dedicate the rest of her life to getting revenge. After all, according to the first movie’s tagline itself, “When you can live forever, what do you live for?” I suppose the vampires don’t have much of a life, and time must seem to drag on, so when Victoria lost James, the most important thing in her life, it triggered the whole obsession with killing Bella. Because really, at that point, what else was there to do?
That’s quite a good point you made, about Bella finally fitting in with the vampires.. It kind of proves the whole idea that Bella “belongs” with Edward. It kind of makes me wonder how she would have fit in with the werewolves if she had chosen Jacob. I mean, is it vampires in specific she fits in with? Or does she just not fit in with humans?

Time July 7, 2010 at 9:04 PM

Ah, now I get what you mean about Victoria. I agree. When you really have nothing to do because you’re a who-know-how-old vampire, I guess you’d fight for the person you love. Makes sense.
And I’m not sure if Bella would fit in with the werewolves. Maybe. But in Breaking Dawn there was this one chapter when Bella was a vampire towards the end, it was called “Shining”(not in the sparkle-in-the-sun sense) or something like that. And that showed that Bella should be a vampire and fits in perfectly.. I don’t know if she would have that moment if she was a werewolf.
But I guess it could have been like that either way, that’s just how I see it.

I see what you mean now.. It’s been quite a while since I read “Breaking Dawn” and that last post made me run upstairs to the bookshelf to grab it. The chapter is called “Shiny” and after skimming through it, I see exactly what you’re saying. In this chapter, Bella beats Emmett in arm wrestling, starts to test her strengths as a vampire, and she herself realized that she had never been exceptionally good at anything as a human, and now she dazzled the people that used to dazzle her. So thank you for that, you’ve made me view the story in quite a different way. And I kind of want to reread the book now, instead of just this chapter. My memory has failed me, it seems. (:

Ok, I sooo cannot choose between the two. I’ve read all the Harry Potter books, seen the first six movies, and loved them. But, I’ve also read all of the Twilight saga, and loved them (but hoped she would end up with Jacob, instead), and have NOT watched the movies because I know they will suck.

Harry Potter rules!!!! 🙂 Twighlight will NEVER be better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Harry Potter is ACTUALLY ENTERTAINING, unlike Twilight.
Here is a list of crimes old Eddy has comitted:
1. Murder
2. Trespassing
3. Stalking
4. Breaking and Entering
5. Getting into fights

Plus, isn’t Bella concerned about the age difference? I mean, seriously, we are talking about a 17 year old going out with a dude who is like 90 years older! And no one batted an eyelid! I bet Bella wouldn’t go for him if he was a wrinkly old man with false teeth. But because he has kept his sparkly beauty, she thinks he is the hottest thing EVER!!!
